Welcome to Oombawka Design!
My name is Rhondda.
I live in a small community just outside Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
I am currently a stay-at-home Mommy to two little monkeys – Darla and Drew –
I have always loved crafts and my other passion is genealogy – I love to research family history.
When I was 8, or 9-years old I was visiting my Great Aunt Catharine for a weekend and she showed me how to crochet a chain and also how to cast on and knit/purl. No one else in my family can crochet or knit – so this hobby was never encouraged.
When I was in my twenties I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and I struggled with finding a skill/hobby to occupy my time between bouts of illness. I picked up a crochet hook and a book and taught myself how to crochet an afghan…and then another…this was before the time of “Youtube”.
I find crochet to be very relaxing and very rewarding. To start with a piece of yarn and to make something beautiful – something useful – it is just so inspiring to me. It seems almost magical.
I expanded my crochet skills last year when I tried my hand at amigurumi. My first pattern (unpublished) is my Brown Bear. My sister asked me if I could make her a cat, like the ones that she breeds/shows, so I tried – and I was able to…I think I was the most surprised out of all my family. She sends one with each kitten/cat she sells (she named them Mini ME-ows).
I loved working in rounds/spirals so the next logical step for me was to make hats for my children and nieces and nephews…then I was asked to make mittens, scarves…slippers…and it just sort of happened from there. I found myself searching for patterns online and not finding what I wanted and then devising my own pattern to fill a need (i.e. like mittens worked in rounds/spirals and not sewn together afterward, or my children’s easy-on mittens because regular mittens are super hard to put on my son’s wiggling hands).
I love to crochet. I love to design. I love to inspire.
I hope you enjoy your visit to my blog – and encourage you to look me up on any of these other Social Media sites (although my most active presence is Facebook – I am there daily and posting links to free crochet patterns I find on the world-wide-web).
Happy Crocheting! Rhondda
